Surgical Procedures
Advanced colorectal and general surgical care, including robotic, laparoscopic and open techniques
Dr Matt Marino provides comprehensive colorectal and general surgical care, ranging from routine diagnostic procedures to complex cancer surgery. Treatment is tailored to each patient, with a focus on achieving the best possible outcome while minimising recovery time and preserving quality of life.
Where appropriate, minimally invasive (keyhole) techniques, including robotic and laparoscopic surgery, are used to reduce pain, shorten hospital stays, and support a faster return to normal activities.

Areas of surgical practice
Dr Matt Marino provides comprehensive colorectal and general surgical care, with expertise spanning cancer surgery, minimally invasive techniques, pelvic floor disorders, colonoscopy and endoscopy, and complex anorectal conditions.
Colorectal surgery
-
Dr Matt Marino provides comprehensive surgical management of colon and rectal cancer, working closely with radiologists, medical and radiation oncologists and other specialists as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Where appropriate, minimally invasive techniques (robotic and laparoscopic surgery) are used to reduce pain, shorten hospital stays, and support faster recovery.
-
Screening enables early detection of bowel cancer, improving treatment options and outcomes. It also identifies and allows removal of precancerous polyps before they develop into cancer, thereby reducing future cancer risk.
Dr Marino provides colonoscopy for both screening and surveillance (colonoscopies after you’ve had bowel cancer). This includes colonoscopies after a positive stool test (FOBT) as part of the Australian Government’s National Bowel Cancer Screening Program. Personalised recommendations will be made based on your medical and family history.
-
TAMIS is an advanced minimally invasive technique used in highly selective cases to remove rectal polyps and early cancers without the need for major abdominal surgery. This procedure is not suitable for advanced rectal pathology.
By accessing the lesion through the anus, TAMIS avoids external incisions and stomas (bags), preserves bowel function, and often results in a faster recovery than more extensive surgery.
-
Surgery can play an important role in managing Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis when medication alone is no longer effective or complications develop.
Dr Marino works closely with gastroenterologists to provide coordinated care, with treatment plans tailored to each patient's disease, symptoms, and long-term goals.
-
Patients with a temporary or permanent stoma often benefit from specialist support throughout their treatment journey.
Dr Marino provides surgical management of conditions requiring a stoma, as well as advice regarding stoma formation, reversal, revision, parastomal hernias and ongoing care when required.
-
Most patients with diverticular disease do not require surgery. However, recurrent attacks, complications, or ongoing symptoms may benefit from specialist assessment.
When surgery is required, minimally invasive techniques are used wherever possible to remove the affected section of bowel and reduce the risk of future episodes.
-
Difficulty controlling bowel motions can have a significant impact on confidence, daily activities, and quality of life.
Assessment focuses on identifying the underlying cause, with treatment ranging from lifestyle and pelvic floor interventions through to surgical options where appropriate. This includes the insertion and management of sacral nerve stimulators (SNS). Care is tailored to help improve bowel control while maintaining function and comfort.
-
Rectal prolapse occurs when part of the rectum prolapses out the anus, causing symptoms such as discomfort, pain, difficulty emptying the bowel, leakage, or a visible bulge.
A range of surgical options are available depending on the severity of the prolapse and the individual patient's needs, with a focus on restoring function and improving quality of life.
General surgery
-
Hernias can cause discomfort, pain, or a visible lump in the groin or abdominal wall. Surgical repair is often recommended when symptoms are affecting quality of life, when there is a risk of complications, and to prevent the hernia from getting bigger and harder to manage.
Dr Matt Marino repairs hernias using robotic and laparoscopic techniques when appropriate.
-
Gallstones can cause pain, nausea, bloating, and episodes of inflammation. When symptoms become troublesome, surgical removal of the gallbladder is often the most effective treatment.
Dr Matt Marino offers laparoscopic (keyhole) cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder), allowing most patients to return to normal activities relatively quickly.
-
Pilonidal disease can cause recurrent infections, pain, and ongoing drainage near the tailbone, often affecting younger adults.
Dr Marino offers modern treatment options, including minimally invasive laser-based techniques where appropriate, with the aim of reducing recovery time, minimising wound complications, and lowering the risk of recurrence.
-
Gastroscopy is a procedure used to examine the oesophagus, stomach, and first part of the small intestine. It can help investigate symptoms such as reflux, heartburn, difficulty swallowing, nausea, abdominal pain, indigestion, iron deficiency, and unexplained bleeding.
Dr Marino provides gastroscopy to diagnose and manage upper gastrointestinal symptoms.
