About Dr Matt Marino
Matt is a Melbourne based colorectal and general surgeon with a passion for delivering modern, patient-focused care. His practice combines advanced surgical expertise with a commitment to inclusivity, ensuring every patient feels supported and respected.
Originally from the Gold Coast, I studied Biomedical Science before earning a scholarship to study a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, graduating with First Class Honours. I began surgical training in Queensland and later moved to Melbourne, completing my general surgery training at the Austin Hospital with rotations across Melbourne, rural Victoria, and Hobart.
I chose to specialise in colorectal surgery because of the diversity within the field—treating bowel cancer with excellent long-term outcomes, as well as managing common benign conditions through a variety of techniques. After completing my initial training, I undertook advanced colorectal training at the Royal Hobart Hospital, where I began training in high-resolution anoscopy (HRA). I then furthered my expertise through prestigious fellowships overseas at Oxford University Hospitals and the John Goligher Colorectal Fellowship at Leeds University Hospital. There, I gained experience in robotic surgery and sub-specialty colorectal, including pelvic floor, intestinal failure and IBD. During my time in Oxford, it was a privilege to be appointed as a tutor at Green Templeton College, Oxford University, and I continue to teach and mentor students in Melbourne.
Recognising the unmet need in Melbourne, I prioritised training in HRA to offer anal cancer screening to patients at risk. I have gained extensive experience performing the procedure across reputable institutions in Hobart, Perth, Oxford, and at the Homerton AIN clinic in London. I have also published on HRA and am an active member of the International Anal Neoplasia Society. I am excited to bring this specialised service to Melbourne.
As a member of the community myself, I am deeply passionate about LGBTQIA+ health. I was proud to establish Pride in Medicine and serve as its first president, a group dedicated to advocacy for both doctors and patients. To ensure comprehensive care, I trained in minimally invasive techniques for common anal conditions, aiming to reduce scarring and enhance both function and aesthetic outcomes. Recognising the scarcity of research in this area, I focus a significant portion of my primary research on it, having published and presented at international conferences. I review articles related to the effects of colorectal surgery on LGBTQIA+ people for the prestigious journal, Colorectal Disease.
Throughout my career, I have worked in rural communities across Australia and remain committed to delivering high-quality healthcare to underserved populations. I hold public appointments at Horsham Hospital, Grampians Health, and I practice at Austin Hospital in Melbourne. Privately, I operate at Epworth and Northern Private Hospitals.
My passion is surgery, and I look forward to helping you with your health, from initial consultation to treatment and beyond.
